Date Announced for the Inquest into the Death of John Brownlie

Dr. Jennifer M. Dmetrichuk, Regional Supervising Coroner, Toronto East Region, announced today that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of John Brownlie. The inquest will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Bonnie Goldberg will be the presiding officer and Julian Roy will be the inquest counsel.

Mr. Brownlie, 88 years old, died on September 25, 2023, following an interaction with officers from Peel Regional Police on September 13, 2023. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Brownlie’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest is expected to last seven days and hear from approximately nine witnesses.
