Date Announced for the Inquest into the Death of Tyson Demers

Dr. Karen Schiff, Regional Supervising Coroner, West Region, Hamilton Office, announced today that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Tyson Demers. The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026. Murray Segal will be the presiding officer and Erin Winocur will be the inquest counsel.

Mr. Demers, 26 years old, died on October 25, 2022, in hospital after being transferred from Niagara Detention Centre. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Demers’ death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest is expected to last six days and hear from approximately five witnesses.
