Date Announced for the Inquest into the Death of Matthew Di Giovanni

Dr. Richard Wells, Regional Supervising Coroner, Central Region, Toronto West Office, announced today that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Matthew Di Giovanni. The inquest will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026. Dr. John Carlisle will be the presiding officer and Peter Napier will be the inquest counsel.

Mr. Di Giovanni, 34 years old, died on September 10, 2019, following an interaction with officers from Peel Regional Police on the same day. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Di Giovanni’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest is expected to last 10 days and hear from approximately 12 witnesses.
