How to defend a Small Claims Court case in Ontario

1. Diary the deadline on the issued claim

   Missing it can lead to default judgment. The time runs from service.

2. Fill Form 9A Defence

   Admit, deny, or explain each part of the claim. Attach the documents you rely on. Download Form 9A the day you file.

3. If you have your own claim against the plaintiff, add Form 10A

   That is a Defendant’s Claim. It is a separate form with its own facts and amount.

4. File, serve, and keep stamped copies

   Then attend the settlement conference. Bring a short document brief.
