New Regional Senior Justice Appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice

The Honourable Doug Downey, Attorney General of Ontario, is pleased to announce the appointment of a new regional senior justice to the Ontario Court of Justice.

Justice Marlyse Dumel has been appointed to the East Region, effective September 25, 2026.

In March 2017, Justice Dumel was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice, presiding in Ottawa in both English and French. Between 2022 and 2026, she was the local administrative judge. Justice Dumel has served as the East Region representative for the Association of Ontario Judges and was a member of the Justices of the Peace Review Council. She is currently a member of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee.

Justice Dumel was called to the bar in 2002. She worked with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada for 13 years, prosecuting criminal matters and providing legal advice and training to prosecutors and police services. Justice Dumel also served as the secretary for the National Prosecution Policy Committee and was a member of the Employment Equity and Diversity Committee.

Justice Dumel is a member of the International Association of Women Judges. She has been the co-chair of Ottawa’s Futures in Justice program since 2023 and has been a guest speaker at Black History Month events, and other engagements, at a number of schools, the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario (AJEFO) and the Government of Canada’s Department of Justice.

A regional senior judge of the Ontario Court of Justice exercises the powers and performs the duties of the chief justice in his or her region, subject to the authority of the chief justice. This includes scheduling court hearings and assigning cases to individual judges.
