Citizenship versus permanent residence

This page is a public educational walkthrough. It is not a retainer, a court form, or a promise about your result. For legal advice, you should contact an appropriate Lawyer or Paralegal specializing in the area of law you need assistance with.

  1. Permanent residence is not citizenship

Each has its own documents, travel rules and application forms.

  2. Open both statutes if you are unsure which status you have

Citizenship Act and IRPA are on the Immigration shelf.

  3. Confirm status on official documents

A screenshot is not a status document. Applications still go through IRCC.
