How to apply for Legal Aid Ontario

This page is a public educational walkthrough. It is not a retainer, a court form, or a promise about your result. For legal advice, you should contact an appropriate Lawyer or Paralegal specializing in the area of law you need assistance with.

  1. Legal Aid Ontario is a separate organization

Know The Law does not issue certificates and does not see your financial information.

  2. Have the charge, the family file number, or the notice you received

Applications ask what the problem is. “I have a legal issue” is not enough.

  3. Apply through Legal Aid Ontario’s published channels

Phone, online or a local office, according to their current instructions.

  4. Financial and coverage rules can refuse a certificate

That refusal does not erase court dates on your other papers.

  5. Duty counsel at a courthouse is a different, limited service

It is not the same as a full retainer.
