How to use a citation on a federal Act

This page is a public educational walkthrough. It is not a retainer, a court form, or a promise about your result. For legal advice, you should contact an appropriate Lawyer or Paralegal specializing in the area of law you need assistance with.

  1. Federal Acts use a chapter code such as C-46

That is how the Criminal Code is cited. The title alone is not unique enough in search.

  2. Open the Act page on this site and type the section number

Use the sticky Go to section bar. Neighbouring subsections are often the real rule.

  3. Confirm currency on the official Justice link at the bottom of our intro

We reproduce text. Justice remains the official source.

  4. Regulations have their own citations

Do not treat a regulation section as a Criminal Code section.

  5. Part I and Part II in the Criminal Code are not separate Know The Law URLs

They live on the main Criminal Code page.
